Defend Europe activists could be arrested for protecting a border in Europe

Activists of Defend Europe have been patrolling the French-Italian borders for almost a month now. According to a new administrative circular issued on May 4th by the minister of justice, discovered by Mediapart, they will now face arrest if they continue their actions.

Defend Europe militants arrested a lot of migrants when they crossed the French-Italian border. They were justified to make such arrests because in France citizen arrests are lawfully, when they are made against criminals caught red-handed. And being on France’s soil without legal justification is a crime.

But, Mediapart has been made aware of new orders coming from the Minister of Justice, which issued an administrative circular on 4 May.

It states :

“The control of the respect of the borders (…) by people hostile to the circulation of the migrants (in particular activists claiming the Identitarian Movement) is likely to constitute an intentional interference in the functions of the law enforcement.

The deportation of migrants by these same persons, including without violence, is also likely to characterize the offense provided for by article 433-2 of the Penal Code.”

With their latest actions, Defend Europe successfully showed to the world the total porosity and weakness of the French-Italian borders.

By doing so, they angered the French government who opened an investigation on them, and closed it after not finding any lawless moves from the young Identitarians.

Mediapart has learned that the Gap’s public prosecutor who opened the now closed investigation has expressly asked for the ministry to issues this administrative circular.
